Supporting Independence

How we help people with dementia

It is important to help people who are in the early stages of dementia to continue to be independent, and enjoying life. Try to focus on what the person can still do, and encourage them to help themselves with prompts and reminders. Just Checking will give you a clearer indication of how someone is managing when they are alone in the house, whether they are retaining a daily pattern, and when they may need more help.

The objective view from the Just Checking system, gives more opportunities to support people in their own home, where they usually want to be. The familiarity of home helps people with dementia to make sense of their world, and provides clues and reminders of what to do. Moving at this stage may increase dependency.
